Matt Castle

The Storyteller Behind 'Powered By Stories'

I'm Matt Castle, producer, storyteller, lover of emerging technology, connector of brands to people, and people to brands. My greatest successes have involved creating a virtual version of 'the dark web’ using VR technology (to make Cybersecurity learning more engaging), transforming diversity & inclusion training for FTSE 100 companies through interactive storytelling, and securing a £5 million investment to launch an immersive technology platform. See the Case Studies section for more info on each of these projects.

My Journey

My work crafting stories that connect with people at a deeper level goes back 20 years. Motivated by a passion for working with young people, combined with my own struggles with traditional learning at school and college, I began creating programs for youth work charities, children's homes and housing associations. My programs involved young people at each stage of the short-form film-production process. Learn more about these programs here. Designed to challenge perceptions, make learning and personal development more appealing, I wanted to make sure each young person we worked with felt seen, heard, and truly inspired- through the transformative process of bringing engaging stories to life.

Collaborations with brands such as Sky, Burberry and charities such as Ideas Foundation (who create opportunities for disadvantaged young people to work in the creative industries), reinforced my belief in the importance of telling authentic stories. Stories that often inspired creativity, built empathy and opened up new possibilities, for young people across various communities.

Why 'Powered By Stories'?

Learning I had ADHD in 2022 helped reshape my purpose. Always creative and coming up with new ideas, I struggled to prioritise important tasks. After my diagnosis, I got the help I needed to focus my attention and harness my creativity and apply what I had learned working with some of the UK's leading production companies and creative agencies. Having seen what was possible bringing immersive stories to life for brands such as Heathrow Airport, EY, JP Morgan, and Barclays bank, 'Powered By Stories' was born.  The science, the art and magic of storytelling in its different forms had always fascinated me, particularly when incorporated with interactivity.

My Belief

I've seen how narratives can be crafted to grab attention and influence what/how people think, feel and believe. I saw potential in changing people's lives by helping them harness the power and potential of their own stories. I realised it's a craft that isn’t exclusive to the global brands with 6/7/8 figure marketing budgets.

Accessible and immensely potent, immersive, interactive storytelling extends beyond branding into transformative learning, inspiring personal development and higher levels of employee engagement. Looking ahead, I'm excited to bring to life new narratives that push the boundaries of traditional storytelling. With every workshop, every film, and every partnership, my goal is to create experiences that are not just seen but felt, but lead to long lasting change.

HOW I CAN HELP YOU WITH INTERACTIVE STORYTELLING

01.

Amplify Engagement

You can use stories to create shared experiences between consumers and your brand. Turn passive viewers into active participants, creating a deeper emotional connection with your content.

02.

Customise Narratives

Craft tailored pathways that adapt to viewers choices, allowing them to access additional content and information. Explore alternative scenarios & see the impact & consequences of their choices.

03.

Enhance Learning

Transform mundane training modules into engaging, experiential learning journeys. Help learners retain information by making complex information more accessible & enjoyable.

Create broadcast quality, binge-worthy video content

Instead of maxing out your marketing budget on ads that people skip over, why not make a binge-worthy video series that people are tuning in to watch?

Why Story?

An intrinsic part of human nature, storytelling is not just a form of entertainment, It's a powerful tool to build bridges, facilitating a deeper sense of understanding and connection. It's inclusive and universal, ensuring content produced is more personalised, impactful and emotionally resonant, particularly for neurodiverse individuals, who may experience the world differently. Here's why:

Universal Language

Stories are a universal language that transcends cultural, linguistic, and cognitive boundaries. For neurodiverse individuals, this familiarity can provide a comforting framework within which information is presented.

Contextual Learning

Stories provide context, making abstract concepts tangible. Individuals with conditions such as dyslexia, may struggle with isolated facts or figures. A narrative provides a holistic picture, making it easier to process and internalise information.

Encouraging Empathy

Stories allow us to walk in someone else's shoes. For fostering understanding between neurodiverse individuals and neurotypical individuals, stories can be instrumental. By narrating experiences of ADHD or autism, for example, stories can foster empathy and understanding among those unfamiliar with these conditions.

Enhanced Visualisation

Stories stimulate the mind's eye. Visualisation can be a powerful tool, especially for those who might find traditional learning methods challenging. By creating a mental picture, stories can simplify complex ideas, making them accessible to all.

Emotional Resonance

Stories evoke emotions. They make us feel empathy, joy, fear, excitement, and a myriad of other feelings. Emotions are key to memory and recall. For many, especially those who might process information differently due to conditions like ADHD or autism, an emotional connection can be pivotal in understanding and remembering important information.

Engaging Multiple Senses

Good stories engage multiple senses – sight, sound, and sometimes even touch or smell. This multisensory engagement can be particularly beneficial for neurodiverse individuals. For instance, someone with ADHD might find it easier to focus on a story that's both visually and audibly engaging.

Flexibility in Presentation

Stories can be told in myriad ways—through books, videos, audio narratives, interactive games, and more. This flexibility ensures that content can be tailored to suit varied learning styles, which is crucial for a neurodiverse audience.

Repetitive and Predictable Structure

The classic story structure (beginning, middle, end) can be predictable. For individuals with neurodiverse conditions, who often find comfort in repetition and predictability, this structure can make stories a preferred mode of receiving information. In summary, stories are not just a means of entertainment. They are powerful tools that cater to our cognitive, emotional, and social needs. Stories can offer a bridge, facilitating understanding, connection, and learning.

Our Mission

At 'Powered By Stories', we specialise in crafting compelling narratives that resonate with all, but with a particular emphasis on the neurodiverse community. We create content that doesn't just speak to neurodiverse individuals but celebrates the unique perspectives and strengths they bring. By developing interactive video content tailored for diverse learning styles, we ensure that everyone, regardless of neurodiversity, has access to impactful, memorable, and meaningful learning experiences.

OUR PROCESS

From defining strategic objectives to expertly crafting content, our process is designed to bring your ideas to life, ensuring ongoing success through result-driven monitoring and optimisation.

01.

Define your strategy and objectives

The first stage of our process is one of discovery, listening and structured exploration, which is critical for innovation. I’ll work with you to understand the scope of work and propose a solution that fits your budget and meets your requirements.

When defining a strategy that's unique to your business (that ultimately serves to realise your competitive advantage), I’ll gather information about your company, your expectations and objectives. We’ll agree on a framework for how we will define and measure success, and carry out detailed research into your competitors.

02.

Identify, write and craft stories

Questions I ask, and processes we go through, will help collect the insights to make sense of your story/stories and help you envision the future. This will result in a purposeful, clearly defined strategy that is ready to be acted upon, like a script.

I’ll help you to think not just about what is being communicated, but how it impacts your audience. We’ll define a plan to shape your stories to truly differentiate your brand, in a way your audience relates to and engages with.

03.

Content production

Once strategies have been approved, storyboards agreed and scripts signed off, the content production process can begin. Content or experience will be brought to life on film, or using VR/ AR technology. Our expert production team will ensure each stage is carefully thought through and is an enjoyable process for everyone.

Production schedules will be created, actors or presenters will be cast if required. Coaching sessions for your staff may also be arranged. Once filming for each day of filming is complete, post production will begin, where we can add motion graphics, music, subtitles. We will also produce shorter edits for social media, or made to appeal to specific audiences if required.

04.

Track results and measure success

Your stories may be published to your internal platforms, broadcast on your website or through social media, according to the plan agreed at the start of the project or campaign. Having defined how interactivity will enhance the user experience during the initial stage, we will implement the interactive overlays according to the agreed plan.

We will ensure you have full visibility and deeper insight on how viewers are relating and responding to your content through a comprehensive dashboard.

Richard starts by understanding the deeper emotional drivers that influence buying decisions.
